How to realize all the New Year’s plans?

New Year – time to take stock and think about what we do next. Most of us plan large-scale plans for the next year, but only a few adhere to them and succeed. A few little tricks will help us not to stray from the right path.

Almost 45% of people around the world on New Year’s Eve make extensive plans for the future. Someone gives himself the word to quit smoking, to plan time more efficiently, or to finally start going to the gym. However, only 8% as a result achieve success, and 24% of us give up all our undertakings already in the first week of January.

In the end, we blame our lack of discipline and weakness in everything, and the feeling of guilt makes it worse for us. In the meantime, compliance with just a few simple rules often allows us to implement our solutions.


Choose one task you will concentrate on. Yes, it is not easy, because most likely at the moment when you read these lines, you have many other windows open and you respond to a friend on Facebook at the same time and look for information in a search engine. “Attempts to succeed in several endeavors, as a rule, end in failure,” says time management expert and best-selling author of Success Rental, Rory Waden. – If you are trying to implement all the resolutions at once, then most likely on the way of implementation of each of them you will fail. You feel strong discomfort and disappointment from this, and the desire to try again naturally disappears. Try to set yourself a phased task, for example – the task of the month. Indeed, in the year 395 days, 12 months and 525,600 minutes. Such significant figures, as well as global tasks, themselves frighten us – we subconsciously think that we will never reach the end. That is why, when carrying out the plan, it would be more correct to disconnect and not think about the final result. Gradually, new habits will enter our lives, and we will be able to easily carry out complex tasks with little to no hesitation. According to recent studies, the majority (75%) of those who managed to partially accomplish something in the first months of the year continue to stick to their plans.


“When we tell other people about our plans, we don’t want to upset them as a result, and at the same time it makes us more responsible to ourselves,” says social psychologist Jen Kim. “Therefore, it’s worth sharing your New Year’s decisions with those whose opinion you care about.”


This board is owned by Ramita Sehti, a finance planning coach. “If you, for example, decide to start a healthier lifestyle, it’s almost impossible to avoid the days when you miss a trip to the gym, smoke a cigarette again, or don’t resist junk food. Just do not punish yourself for it – let it be part of your plan. What exactly will you do in such situations? Prepare a lighter meal the next day, give up dinner, or go jogging? It is worthwhile to think over the course of action. ”


Researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center (USA) found that those who clearly formulated their plans: “I want to lose 6 kg” instead of vague “I want to lose weight” were more likely to succeed. At the same time, your tasks should be as realistic as possible. “You can’t set yourself a goal to swim across the Pacific Ocean if you don’t know how to swim and you are afraid of the depth,” reminds Rory Wadden. “So with the New Year tasks, set yourself the most attainable levels for every four weeks of the next month.”


The idea echoes the first point – the task of the month – and is not to overload yourself with tasks at the very beginning, which is likely to lead us to the collapse of our plans. Small victories allow us to feel that we are doing well with the task and on the right track. “If you want to get a new job, do not try to do everything at the same time,” says Rory Waden. – Focus, for example, on how to correctly rewrite a resume. And ask a friend whose opinion you trust, to evaluate it. ”


Indeed, we do not go on a journey without thinking of the route, and do not start cooking without having at hand food. To implement the New Year’s decisions, we need the same plan. For example: next year we would like to accumulate so much in order to buy this. What expenses could we cut? What realistic amount could be deferred? Is it possible to earn extra money and what additional costs will not be avoided (holidays, birthday gifts, and so on)? This point is very difficult for most of us, and only very organized people who can and love to plan everything in advance enjoy it. At the same time, if you do not have at least a rough plan in front of you, how exactly we will implement our ideas, they risk remaining forever in the realm of fantasy.
